Veterinary Anesthesia Position Announcement

 The Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine at The University of Tennessee invites applications for a full-time, clinical-track or tenure-track faculty position in Veterinary Anesthesia at the Assistant/Associate Professor rank.  The successful applicant will join a dynamic anesthesia service comprised of three ACVAA board certified anesthesiologists, three anesthesia residents, eight anesthesia technicians (three VTS certified in anesthesia), and one veterinary assistant.

The anesthesia service provides anesthetic care for patients in the small animal, large animal, and exotic animal hospitals.  The University of Tennessee Veterinary Medical Center (VMC) is a modern facility equipped with all the resources and expertise (18 specialty services) needed to provide first class patient care, clinical research, and teaching.  The VMC has a comprehensive ICU with VECCS Level 1 Certification and four faculty members who are board certified in Veterinary Emergency Medicine and Critical Care; a minimally invasive procedures unit and faculty members with expertise in endoscopy, laparoscopy, and stenting; a state-of-the-art physical therapy facility including hyperbaric oxygen therapy; and onsite stem cell development.  Clinical services are supported by excellent clinical pathology and diagnostic pathology departments.  A full-time Veterinary Social Work program offers counseling services for clients, faculty, staff, and students.  Other support services include behavior and nutrition. 

Knoxville is a beautiful and friendly place to live. It was recently named one of the country’s Top 100 Best Places to Live by livability.com and one of Forbes Top 25 Best Bang for the Buck Cities and is commonly known as the ‘Most Dog Friendly City’. It is a short drive away from the Great Smoky Mountains, as well as a number of dog-friendly state parks and recreation areas. Outdoor recreational opportunities include, hiking, biking, trail running, climbing, and water sports. Knoxville has a vibrant downtown with excellent restaurants; bustling farmer’s markets featuring locally grown organic produce, meats and crafts; live music of all genres, ballet, and theater; frequent art, music, and cultural festivals; and men’s and women’s sporting events.

Requirements for the applicant include a DVM or equivalent degree, completion of a formal residency in veterinary anesthesiology, and certification or eligibility for certification by the American College of Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia or the European College of Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia.  Responsibilities of the faculty include clinical service; clinical and didactic teaching of anesthesia and analgesia to professional students, interns and residents; development of a basic science or clinical research program; and participation in continuing education at the local and national level.
