Senior Clinician – Anesthesia (ECVAA/ACVAA)
50-100% Equine or 100% shared equally between equine and small animal

The Equine Clinic at the Centre for Clinical Veterinary Medicine, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (LMU Munich), Germany, invites applications for a Senior Clinician position (“Oberarzt/Oberärztin”) in Anesthesia.

The position is available as of June 1, 2026, or by negotiation, for one year, with the option of renewal. Salary: up to TV-L E14, depending on qualifications. Candidates must hold a veterinary degree. Diplomate status in the European or American College of Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia is preferred; however, residency-trained individuals eligible to sit the final certification examination will also be considered. Knowledge of the German language is not required.

The successful candidate will have the unique opportunity to establish and develop an Equine Anesthesia Service within a brand-new, state-of-the-art academic equine teaching hospital. As there is currently no dedicated anesthesia service within the Equine Clinic, we are seeking a highly motivated individual with a strong interest in building and shaping this service at a university level. The position can be structured either as 50–100% equine anesthesia or as a 100% appointment shared equally between the Equine Clinic and the Small Animal Clinic. In contrast to the equine service, the Small Animal Clinic has an established anesthesia team, into which the successful candidate would be integrated.

Primary responsibilities include the development and leadership of an equine anesthesia service, as well as clinical service, teaching, and research activities in the Equine Clinic and, if applicable, in the Small Animal Clinic. Teaching duties comprise didactic instruction and clinical supervision of veterinary students, interns, residents, and graduate students. A key component of the position will be the training of a team of veterinarians within the Equine Clinic to ensure sustainable, high-quality anesthesia support, including emergency coverage.

A strong commitment to evidence-based medicine and active participation in the continuing education program of the teaching hospital are expected. Engagement in clinical research, supervision of doctoral students, and acquisition of external research funding are encouraged and supported. Clinical research in a highly collaborative environment within the faculty is encouraged and actively supported. The Equine Clinic is part of the Centre for Clinical Veterinary Medicine, which includes a wide range of nationally and internationally board-certified specialists (e.g., ECVAA, ECEIM/ACVIM, ECVS/ACVS – Equine and Small Animal, ACVSMR, ECVDI, ECVD, ECAR, ECBHM), offering excellent opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration.

The Equine Clinic is located on the new campus of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at LMU Munich in Oberschleißheim, on the northern outskirts of Munich. The Small Animal Clinic is located in the center of Munich, offering access to its rich cultural attractions. Munich is close to the German Alps and several beautiful lakes, and the region provides easy access to numerous outdoor activities, including hiking, biking, climbing, and skiing.

LMU Munich is an equal opportunity employer. Applicants with disabilities will be given preference in cases of approximately equal qualifications.
