Anaesthesia Internship Position

Fitzpatrick Referrals, Guildford, Surrey, UK

Fitzpatrick Referrals Oncology and Soft Tissue hospital is seeking applications for its anaesthesia internship programme starting in July 2022.

We are a purpose-built specialist referral hospital in Guildford, Surrey, dedicated to expert care, innovative clinical decision-making and compassionate communication. Our facilities are state-of-the-art and include four operating theatres, a 160-slice CT scanner, C-arm fluoroscopy, an interventional radiology suite, minimally invasive surgical equipment, cell-saver machine, cystoscopy, endoscopy, bronchoscopy, dedicated chemotherapy preparation and administration rooms, ultrasonography, digital radiography and a full in-house laboratory.

We are looking for a motivated anaesthesia intern who is committed to providing the highest standard of veterinary medicine, patient and client care, and improving their anaesthesia, general knowledge and technical skills.

The successful candidate will work under direct supervision and guidance of one ECVAA diplomate and one ECVAA residency trained fellow, to provide anaesthesia and analgesia for a wide surgical and diagnostic caseload in companion animals. The anaesthesia intern will also work with a team of other specialists including diplomates of ACVS / ECVS / ECVIM / ACVIM / ECVDI, ECVS surgical residents, rotating interns, radiographers, clinical research assistants, registered veterinary nurses, undergraduate veterinary students, veterinary nursing students and auxiliaries.

This 12-month post will provide training in all aspects of anaesthesia and analgesia for secondary and tertiary referrals. Duties will involve daily collaboration with all clinical and non-clinical teams as part of a busy hospital.

Active involvement with clinical research, leading towards a peer-reviewed publication is encouraged. Upon completing the programme, you will have gained confidence and competence in complex and varied anaesthesia and analgesia cases, and therefore the post is ideally suited for candidates considering pursuing a residency training in anaesthesia. In addition, you should be care driven, have excellent communication skills, be organised, have good interpersonal skills, ability to work and think under pressure, and be able to operate in a 24/7 team environment.

The successful candidate must be a MRCVS and preferably have completed a 12-month rotating internship or at least one year of general small animal practice (consideration will be given to exceptional new graduates). Overseas applicants must be able to communicate clearly in English, both verbally and in writing. If you are not exempt from proving your English language proficiency, possession of the IELTS-Academic test, with an average overall score of at least 7.0 and a minimum of 6.5 in one of the listening, reading, writing and speaking components is required.

Interviews will be held in early April 2022.

Our hospital is located in Guildford, on the Surrey Research Park. Ideally located adjacent to the University of Surrey School of Veterinary Medicine, the St. Luke’s Cancer Centre, and The Royal Surrey Hospital. It is well served by both Gatwick and Heathrow airports and is within 30 minutes of central London via train.

We offer a competitive salary and remuneration package, RCVS registration, VDS membership, funded CPD, pension scheme, health cash plan and an employee assistance programme. Off-site accommodation is available if required.
