Location: Derby, UK
Institution: Pride Veterinary Centre
Why should you apply? Please read on to see how we can help your career progress:
The Local Area
Pride Veterinary Centre is located at the edge of Derby city centre (15 – 20 minute walk) with good transport links to major cities via road and rail network. East Midlands Airport and Birmingham International Airport offer convenient access to domestic and international destinations. The countryside surrounding Derby is beautiful, with the nearby Peak District offering lots of opportunities for outdoor climbing, hiking, running, and sightseeing.
The Hospital and the Team
Pride Veterinary Centre is a multidisciplinary small animal hospital located in Derby, United Kingdom. The successful candidate will work under direct supervision of anaesthesia specialists (2 ECVAA and 1 ACVAA Diplomates, and 2 residency trained fellows) to provide anaesthesia and analgesia service for a highly varied surgical and diagnostic case load. You will be part of a large, multicultural, fun team of clinicians, residents, rotating and discipline interns who support each other – Friday Neapolitan pizza nights happen every week!
Currently, the hospital offers specialist services in Anaesthesia and Analgesia, Diagnostic Imaging, Soft Tissue and Orthopaedic surgeries, Internal Medicine, Oncology, Neurology, Ophthalmology, Dermatology, and Exotics. The hospital is staffed 24/7 to provide around the clock care to our patients. It is modern and spacious, and we have a very large prep area for Anaesthesia to work in. You can find out more about the hospital through our website: http://www.
The Role and Requirements
We are looking for someone with 1 – 2 years of clinical experience in general practice (preferably small animal) or who has taken part in a rotating internship. You will receive training to manage anaesthesia and sedation of varied complexity and will gain competence in skills such as performing locoregional blocks and gaining vascular access, just to name a few. As well as participating in the on-call rota, you will manage your own anaesthesia, always working under supervision of one of the anaesthesia clinicians. Additionally, you will receive formal and informal teaching through tutorials, book and article readings and case discussions throughout the program.
The internship program is aimed at preparing the candidate for a residency and the success rate of our past anaesthesia interns in securing a residency position (ECVAA and ACVAA) has been excellent. However, desire to pursue a residency is not a requirement for the position. Due to UK regulations, you must be a member of the RCVS to be able to work as Veterinary Surgeon in the United Kingdom. However if you are not a member, please do not let this deter you from applying; more information on how you can proceed can be found here: https://www.rcvs.org.uk/
