The Comparative Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine team at the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Minnesota is a young and upbeat group comprised of 4 DACVAAs, 2 first-year residents, 10 technicians and one potential DVM residency trained hire to cover after hour cases. We are a team that provides anesthetic care to approximately four thousand patients per year. Small animals account for the majority of our caseload which brings a plethora of challenges and potential for advanced procedures such as ultrasound-guided peripheral blocks, one-lung ventilation and our developing interdisciplinary CVCI (Center for Veterinary Cardiovascular Innovation). We are equipped with state of the art multiparametric monitors (a couple with the capability of PPV) and an A5 work-station with complete spirometry and ventilation modes allowing for tailored ventilation strategies. We perform many peripheral nerve blocks with ultrasound and nerve stimulation guidance, always trying to improve existing techniques and develop new techniques to increase patient comfort.
Our residency program has undergone complete revision and with the new incoming residents, we are excited and looking forward to instituting a strong program focused on didactic and clinical training while still providing desirable work-life balance. Our team works with 35 other specialties and offers services from sedation to general anesthesia for a comprehensive modality of procedures. Teaching is one of the team’s main focus areas and it includes classroom and laboratory teaching to 2nd and 3rd-year veterinary students and clinical teaching to 4th-year students.
We are currently modifying our curriculum to meet the entrustable professional activities defined by the Competency-Based Veterinary Education initiative from the AAVMC. Our students are introduced to basic concepts of anesthesia during their 2nd year by visiting the anesthesia floor and also learning about machines. Our didactic teaching is a mix of classical format lectures with active learning activities to enable our students to mature skills such as integration, communication, collaboration, clinical reasoning and problem-solving. Research is an area full of opportunities. Collaborative research is important as a clinical professor and our anesthesia faculty works together to make published research our public face to our veterinary community, showing who we are and what we do.
The anesthesia service is highly committed to providing outstanding teaching and patient care. Primary duties include clinical case management and supervision of small and large animal patients in the Veterinary Medical Center, Large Animal Center and Piper Equine Clinic. Our team provides anesthetic care to exotic and zoo animals through partnerships with the Minnesota Zoo and Como Zoo. Teaching duties include clinical teaching to fourth-year veterinary students, interns, and residents, plus didactic and laboratory teaching to students in the DVM curriculum. We are constantly providing continuing education for our technical staff, so participation in training programs for anesthesia technicians is also expected. The University of Minnesota – Veterinary Medical Center has over 50 veterinarians with specialty training and it is part of our duty to provide consultations to faculty, residents, interns, and also community veterinarians; Primary or collaborative, clinical or basic research programs are available. Our tenure track faculty, Dr. Alonso Guedes, provides the opportunity to study and perform research on pain and analgesia. Provision of after-hours emergency anesthesia services is expected in the form of phone consultations or physical presence. The chosen candidate will join an anesthesia service with all the support necessary to ensure optimal clinical performance and teaching and to allow for a successful career. Distribution of time is open for discussion but a minimum of 28 weeks/year clinical service is necessary.
Candidates must have a DVM or equivalent degree along with advanced training in veterinary anesthesiology and pain medicine. Preference will be given to individuals who are board-certified by the American College of Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia (ACVAA) or European College of Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia (ECVAA). However, board-eligible applicants who have successfully completed an Anesthesia residency by employment start date are also encouraged to apply. Three years minimum experience in anesthesia with evidence of outstanding interpersonal skills, seamless interactions with a variety of receiving services and the potential to develop collaborative research is highly desirable.
