The North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine (NCSU CVM) announces a clinical track faculty position in veterinary anesthesiology at the assistant or associate level. This position is appointed to the Department of Molecular Biomedical Sciences (MBS), which is one of three academic departments constituting the College of Veterinary Medicine.

 

About the Service and the NC State Veterinary Hospital

The NC State Veterinary Hospital Anesthesiology Service includes seven ACVAA board-certified anesthesiologists and five residents training for ACVAA eligibility. The service is supported by 2 centralized hospital schedulers, 2 veterinary assistants and 10 Registered Veterinary Technicians with extensive on-the-job training and experience working as anesthetists conducting case management and veterinary student education. Two of the technicians are certified Veterinary Technician Specialist (VTS) in Anesthesia. The annual anesthesia caseload at NC State is approximately 4,000, of which the majority is canine and feline with approximately 20% equine, food animal, and exotics. The NC State Veterinary Hospital is comprised of the 110,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art Randall B. Terry, Jr. Companion Animal Veterinary Medical Center, the Equine and Farm Animal Veterinary Center, the Veterinary Health and Wellness Center, a 100,000 square-foot CVM Research Building and Satellite and Field Veterinary Services.  U.S. News and World Report ranks the College of Veterinary Medicine at NC State University 4th of  North American colleges of veterinary medicine.

 

Requirements and Duties

Applicants must hold a DVM or equivalent degree, have completed an ACVAA/ECVAA residency, and be eligible for or have achieved specialty board certification.

 

The responsibilities of the new faculty member will include a 34-36 week clinical effort, specifically: 1) Supervision for clinical anesthesia service within the teaching hospital. This involves patient assessment and care; and supervision and teaching of technicians, house officers, and fourth year veterinary medical students during delivery of anesthesia care to client-owned patients. 2) Supervise and provide professional support to house officers throughout their training program. 3) Provide professional consultation to other services of the NC State Veterinary Hospital, and  the professional community at large. 4) Supervising the after hours/emergency caseload which includes on-call duty divided among the faculty team. Additional teaching responsibilities will include: 1) Provide professional training to students enrolled in the CVM professional curriculum. This involves clinical activity in the teaching hospital, rounds, teaching laboratory exercises, and didactic instruction. 2) Clinical and academic instruction for house officers via rounds and reading group participation. 3) The remaining effort will include scholarly activity through collaborative or independent research and participation in CVM and/or NC State Veterinary Hospital committee activities.
