The Experimental Surgery Facility (ESF) is a service provider unit of the Experimental Animal Center (EAC) of the University of Bern. Our main task is to support the design, the ethical suitability, and the implementation of challenging short and long-term experimental trials in which anaesthesia and analgesia are required. Cardiovascular, neurovascular and transplantation surgeries as well as mini-invasive cardiovascular interventions and sepsis models are highly represented in our case log, mostly carried out in pigs, minipigs, rabbits and rats.
The Facility is a satellite centre of the ECVAA, has been renovated in 2020, and is equipped with state-of the-art anaesthesia, monitoring, imaging and diagnostic devices.
As of December 1st, 2023 or by agreement, we are looking for a motivated, flexible, resilient and humourful
Senior clinician in Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia

Tasks
- Supervise or provide anaesthesia to animals operated in the Facility, with some projects running beyond normal working hours
- Provide perioperative care to the animals in house and at the external farm
- Review anaesthesia relevant parts of the experimental applications
- Advice scientists on state of the art and ethically sustainable anaesthesia and analgesia protocols
- Perform administrative tasks as needed (planning, compliance, Pyrat, writing SOPs, pharmacy, radioprotection)
- Participate to the weekend on-duty schedule of the EAC vetservice (1 weekend every 2-3 months)
- Contribute to the GLP accreditation of the unit
- Take part to the internal and external continuing education program
Requirements
- Master’s degree in veterinary medicine and board certificate in veterinary anaesthesia and analgesia (ECVAA or ACVAA diploma) or board eligibility
- Boards certified from other colleges (ACVECC, ECVECC, ECLAM and ECZM (Small Mammals)) are also encouraged to apply, if they have a solid, demonstrable experience in the field of anaesthesia and analgesia.
- Experience in ICU and/or with research animals are of advantage
- Genuine interest in the research setting, enthusiasm for the specialty, and value high-quality work
- Independent, reliable, and responsible way of working
- A high workload and the willingness to work occasionally outside normal working hours is no problem for you
- Interest and motivation in working in a multi-professional and multi-lingual team, team player, have good communication skills
- Fluent English language, and willingness to learn German. French a plus.
