Location:  Utrecht, Netherlands

Institution:  Utrecht University

Function

Are you open to a new challenge and willing to move to the Netherlands and work in the charming city of Utrecht? We are looking for an enthusiastic specialist in veterinary anaesthesiology (Dip. ACVAA or ECVAA) or board-eligible ACVAA or ECVAA veterinarian to join our international, dynamic and friendly team at Utrecht University where English is a common language.

The hospital’s anaesthesiology team supports both the small animal and equine clinics and performs all sedations and general anaesthetics needed for diagnostic imaging, interventional procedures (including cardiologic stenting and ballooning) and surgical procedures (including hypofysectomy/adrenalectomy and so on) as well as radiotherapy, giving staff the opportunity to truly work in the different aspects of their specialty. With the departure of our valued European Specialist in anaesthesiology, a position has become available for a new ECVAA Diplomate. The team consists of one board-eligible Anaesthetist who passed the first part of the exam, 4 Veterinarian-Anaesthesists, two small animal anaesthesia interns. Furthermore our team is supported by three dedicated Anaesthesia Nurses and three Anaesthesia Technicians that complement the small animal anaesthesia service. There are three equine veterinarian-anaesthetists that perform most of the general anaesthetics in equine patients.

Profile

We are very happy to welcome new colleagues who:

  • are preferably board-certified (ACVAA or ECVAA) as a specialist in veterinary anaesthesiology, or completed a residency in anaesthesiology;
  • have a clear affinity and demonstrable extensive experience in the field of clinical anaesthesia and analgesia of companion animals and possibly horses;
  • would like to be part of a large team with technicians, interns and veterinarians that are crazy about anaesthesia and would like to grow and expand knowledge together while working on every patient from ASA 1-5;
  • if applicable to your work wishes, would like to do research and/or undergraduate teaching.

Offer

We offer a permanent position (0.8 – 1.0 FTE), initially starting with a contract of 12 months. The gross salary – depending on previous qualifications and experience – ranges between €3,974 and €6,181 (scale 11/12 according to the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities) per month for a full-time employment. Salaries are supplemented with a holiday bonus of 8% and a year-end bonus of 8.3% per year.

In addition, Utrecht University offers excellent secondary conditions, including an attractive retirement scheme, (partly paid) parental leave and flexible employment conditions. We would like to express the multinational and English speaking character of both our clinic as well as a true university city.

About the Organization

A better future for everyone. This ambition motivates our scientists in executing their leading research and inspiring teaching. At Utrecht University, the various disciplines collaborate intensively towards major societal themes. Our focus is on Dynamics of Youth, Institutions for Open Societies, Life Sciences and Sustainability.

The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine has a unique position in the Netherlands. Not only is this the only institution where veterinarians are trained, but it is also where researchers are working together on innovative scientific research. In addition, the faculty provides specialist clinical care in the largest academic veterinary hospital in Europe. Thanks to this position, the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine is a point of contact for all veterinary matters, both nationally and increasingly internationally. The faculty employs approximately 900 Veterinarians, Scientists and support staff and counts 1,500 students.

The Department of Clinical Sciences is part of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and includes a training institute, research institute and a fully-equipped academic veterinary teaching hospital. The university clinic boasts a large fully equipped small animal hospital with six ORs, an ECVECC-run ICU and a medium care unit, with busy medical and surgical services (including orthopaedics, neurology, cardiology, dentistry, oncology, but also behavioural consultations, dermatology and ophthalmology). Immediately neighbouring the small animal clinic, the university complex also houses a busy equine hospital with more than 100 box stalls, an OR suite with four ORs including a dedicated OR for standing procedures, a 24/7 neonatal foal ICU (in season) and a 24/7 emergency referral clinic as well as an ambulatory equine service. We have a large diagnostic imaging department who supports both equine and small animal clinics (featuring a 1.5T MRI and 64-slice CT scanner, scintigraphy, state-of-the-art digital x-ray and ultrasonography, as well as an angiography suite for interventional cardiology procedures)

Annually, in the small animal hospital alone, approximately 14,000 outpatient consultations take place and over 3,500 anaesthetics are performed. The equine hospital performs approximately 400 elective procedures, 80-100 exploratory laparotomies and 200 standing CTs annually, with patients from within the Netherlands and abroad.
