Position Description:

The Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences, School of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences (SVMBS), Texas A&M University is excited to invite applicants to a full-time non-tenure-track faculty position at the rank of clinical assistant or clinical associate professor in anesthesiology on an 11-month appointment at the rank of clinical assistant or clinical associate professor in anesthesiology. This position has an anticipated start date of Spring or Fall 2025.

 

Duties:

The successful candidate will devote approximately 65% time (negotiable) to clinical instruction and patient care distributed among the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH) Small and Large Animal Teaching Hospitals and Diagnostic Imaging and Cancer Treatment Center. The remaining time will be devoted to integrative classroom and laboratory teaching (15%), research and other scholarly activities (10%), and academic citizenship (10%).

Clinical responsibilities will include patient care, instruction of veterinary students and technicians, mentorship of interns and residents, and participation in afterhours emergency coverage. We are currently a team of 5 boarded anesthesiologists (4 ACVAA and 1 ECVAA), 3 residents, and approximately 20 technicians distributed among the Small and Large Animal Teaching Hospitals and the Diagnostic Imaging and Cancer Treatment Center of our VMTH. A state-of-the-art electronic anesthesia scheduling/case-tracking system along with 19 Mindray anesthesia multiparameter monitors with a central anesthesia station allows the Texas A&M University Anesthesia Service to be one of the most sophisticated in the world. The Anesthesia Service also has its own ultrasound for locoregional blocks, peripheral nerve stimulators, pediatric and adult patient ventilators, Mindray WATO and VETA5 anesthesia stations, Tafonius ventilator with integrated multiparametric monitor, spirometry, one-lung ventilation devices, and a 15-camera monitoring system used to remotely view all equine recoveries as well as radiation therapy cases.

– Classroom and laboratory teaching responsibilities include the education of 2nd year professional students in our anesthesia course in the Spring and clinical teaching to fourth year students. Active supervision of house officers and in-depth participation in intern/resident training (including topic rounds, journal club, and back-up support) is also expected. Our integrated curriculum also includes opportunities to interface with graduate students across multiple disciplines and junior surgery for third year students. The faculty member will also be expected with the other Anesthesiologists as a team to support our DVM 2+2 program by providing remote lecturers and a limited number of on-site laboratories to a small cohort of eighteen veterinary students. – Collaborative research that aligns with expertise in the department, school, and university and builds collaborations with other basic and clinical scientists will be expected.

Qualifications

Each applicant must have a DVM degree (or equivalent) and must be a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia (ACVAA) or European College of Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia (ECVAA), or must have completed an ACVAA or ECVAA approved residency and have met the requirements to take the corresponding board examination. Applicants must be licensed or eligible for regular or special licenses to practice veterinary medicine in Texas.

 

About The Department & Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to interact with approximately 80 small and large animal faculty members and an active group of house officers that includes more than 50 interns and residents from other medical and surgical disciplines. The VMTH is a spacious facility with sophisticated diagnostic and patient care equipment, including but not limited to color-flow Doppler ultrasonography, 4D transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography, digital fluoroscopy, scintigraphy, 40 slice CT, 3T MRI, video endoscopy, nuclear imaging, acid-base/blood-gas analyzers, oxygen and inhalant gas analyzers, standard coagulation as well as TEG and PFA analyzers, in-house blood donor program, intraoperative cell salvage transfusion equipment, phacoemulsification system, high-flow oxygen therapy, and an ICU telemetry system.

 

Radiation capabilities include TomoTherapy and iridium implant brachytherapy. Surgical suites and instrumentation allow for complex orthopedic, neurologic, cardiac, thoracic, oncologic, and abdominal procedures such as stereotactic brain biopsies, cardiac occlusive device implantation, and subcutaneous ureteral bypass device placement. Research equipment available, but not limited to, includes lithium and thermodilution cardiac output monitoring, thermal threshold testing, and mechanical threshold testing. The VMTH has capable personnel including, but not limited to talented ICU technicians, an active multidisciplinary interventional radiology service, two in-house pharmacists with compounding capability, and a clinical trial coordinator.
