POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The Washington State University (WSU) Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences (VCS) in the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) seeks to fill a full-time open rank (assistant professor/associate professor/professor) continuous career track faculty position in Veterinary Anesthesia. The successful applicant will join two other Veterinary Anesthesia faculty members (one ACVAA Diplomate and one ACVAA board-eligible faculty member), and a dedicated team of six anesthesia technicians and two house officers. Salary range is $145,000 – $185,000 per year, depending on qualifications and level of experience and includes a generous benefits package.
The Anesthesia Service provides support to nearly every small animal and large animal service within the WSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH) in Pullman, Washington. Our VTH is the leading referral center in the state of Washington and the Pacific Northwest with over 20,000 patient visits per year, aspiring to be the country’s best academic veterinary hospital for patients, students, clients, colleagues, and community. The joint mission of the VTH and VCS is to improve the health and well-being of all animals through excellence in medical care, training future veterinarians, and finding innovative ways to diagnose and treat disease. Dedicated to this vision and mission are more than 60 full-time faculty members and 170 staff and house officers.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position will emphasize clinical service and clinical teaching, with 60-75% effort devoted to these activities. The successful candidate will provide clinical anesthesia service for the VTH and clinical instruction of professional veterinary students, interns, residents, and graduate students. Remaining effort will comprise classroom/laboratory teaching and/or collaborative research/scholarship within the candidate’s area of interest. The candidate will have the opportunity to join our Simulation-Based Education (SBE) Program to teach principles of anesthesia to third-year DVM students using our innovative anesthesia simulation models in our newly renovated $8 million Clinical Simulation Center. Our SBE Program is the nation’s first veterinary simulation program accredited by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare.
QUALIFICATIONS:
The successful candidate must have a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree (VMD, BVSc) and have completed a residency designed to achieve board certification by the American College of Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia (ACVAA) or European College of Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia (ECVAA) by time of hire.
The successful applicant should be able to effectively communicate and work collegially and collaboratively with people of diverse backgrounds and demonstrate a commitment and relevant ability to successfully advocate for diversity and values of diversity and inclusion. Applicants for associate professor or professor should have a proportionally higher level of scholarship or clinical and teaching experience along with a higher level of national/international recognition as compared to assistant professor applicants. Considerations regarding rank will be determined based on the interests and qualifications of the candidate, as will division of time between clinical duty, teaching, and scholarly activity.
