Three-Year Residency in Anesthesia and Analgesia

Texas A&M University

The Texas A&M School of Veterinary Medicine anesthesia department is excited to announce they have recently obtained funding for an additional 3-year ACVAA-approved residency position.  The anesthesia faculty is committed to creating a program that supports all aspects of the resident training including clinical, didactic, research, and teaching while maintaining a work-life balance. The program goals include resident preparation for the qualifying and certifying examinations of the American College of Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia and the promotion of clinical excellence in veterinary anesthesiology through clinical, didactic, and research opportunities. This includes daily anesthesiology service rounds, weekly house officer rounds, weekly anesthesiology resident rounds, and specialty-focused resident labs. Residents will be encouraged to attend pertinent scientific meetings and present original research.

Our service includes over 15 highly trained veterinary technicians (including VTS-anesthesia), 3-4 residents, and 5-6 ACVAA/ECVAA diplomates. Our high caseload and a huge variety of cases allow residents to get the number and quality of cases that are needed for excellent experience and training such as cardiac V-clamp implantation, SUBS procedures, non-invasive hepatic shunt occlusion, craniotomies, and more.

Our facilities include a state-of-the-art electronic anesthesia scheduling/case-tracking system along with 19 Mindray anesthesia multiparameter monitors with a central anesthesia station. The Anesthesia Service also has an ultrasound for locoregional blocks, peripheral nerve stimulators, pediatric and adult patient ventilators, a Mindray WATO anesthesia station, a Tafonius ventilator with integrated multiparametric monitor, spirometry, one-lung ventilation devices, and a 15-camera monitoring system used to remotely view all equine recoveries as well as radiation therapy cases. The hospital also has Tomography, Vapotherm high flow oxygen therapy, a Draeger V500 ICU Vent & portable ventilator, Genesis Zipthawer plasma thawing, Harol CPAP helmets, VCM Vet monitors, Point of care ultrasound in the ER & ICU work areas, Fukuda hospital-wide ECG telemetry unit, and a Cell Saver blood salvage system.
